Rivers, Beers, Rivers of Beer – Ireland

Hey! No one played my game! Except Delaney. She is the knock down, winner! And she got 4 right.  She made some good guesses and the logic was apparent.  For example, that the same river went through the Polish cities, and could be the Po. It wasn’t, but I appreciate the logic.  She was right that it was the same river that went through Krakow and Warsaw, but the river is the Vistula. The other river with multiple answers was the Danube, going through Bratislava and Budapest.  It also goes through Vienna and another country capital: Belgrade (Serbia). Big River.

 Answers:

  1. Amsterdam, The Netherlands – Amstel
  2. Dublin, Ireland – Liffy
  3. Florence, Italy- Po
  4. Berlin, Germany – Spree
  5. Prague, Czech Republic – Vtlava
  6. Rome, Italy – Tiber
  7. Paris, France – Seine
  8. Warsaw, Poland – Vistula
  9. Krakow,  Poland – Vistula
  10. Cologne, Germany  – Rhine
  11. London,  England – Thames
  12. Budapest, Hungry – Danube
  13. Bratislava, Slovakia – Danube
  14. Inverness,Scotland  – Ness

A lot of beers are names after the rivers which are their source.  We saw the Guinness source.  It is a creek. My next game was going to be matching the city to the beer.  You may have been better at that.  But since no one played….

Guinness ands Green

We are getting the craic in Ireland.  Two things are true: Guinness does taste better here. And the green of the countryside is exactly the green of all things St Patrick’s. It is a greener green than anywhere else. If we had brighter days, it would hurt the eyes. It has  been pretty misty for our time here so far. Back to Guinness. It is really creamy and smooth. The head is so stiff, you could float a penny on it.  Almost zero after taste. They say the reason is that Guinness tastes so  good here, is the Guinness company is very strict about 1. Short runs from the keg to the tap; 2. Very clean tubing. The Guinness company sends personnel to clean the tubing Every Morning. In the mornings in Temple Bar (bar thick area in Dublin) we saw the trucks. So far our best pint was in an old pub in Kilkenny, but yesterday’s in Dingle was a close second. We also toured the Ring of Kerry. Pretty country. But the most popular beer here for locals is a big surprise: Coors Light. I kid you not.

What’s the “Craic”

“Craic” (pronounced crack) means fun, entertainment, good conversation, gossip.  We are learning a whole new version of English now.  We just got home from a night on the town. The town being Killarney, Ireland. We headed into a pub for some live, traditional music at about 7:30 pm (we’re home now, it’s 10 pm).  There was some Irish folk music in the lineup, but also, Joplin, Eagles, Kenny Rogers, Johnny Cash and who played the song “King of the Road”.  Anyway it was a  sing-a-long, and it was fun. In the background, rugby was on TV.  I still do not understand that game, but it is just about the best game ever.  And  I’ll tell you what, American Footballers are whimps in comparison to these
Guys.
